RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Welcome to our Religious Education Program for children and young adults! First Unitarian Church of Lynchburg offers classes and nursery care for infants, children and youth up to age 18. Our goal is to encourage our youngest UUs to think about a wide variety of spiritual and religious issues while building a strong Unitarian Universalist identity. The Religious Education programs offer opportunities for our children to learn to live our Seven Principles by interacting with each other, with church members of all ages, and with the larger Lynchburg community.

For church year 2008-09 children in grades K-5th will be exploring the new Tapestry of Faith curriculum. Curriculum highlights for each grade are provided below.

Preschoolers: Celebrating Me and My World is a UU curriculum for preschoolers that celebrates the joyful qualities of our young UUs and leads the children through an exploration of the world and people around them.

Kindergarten - 2nd grade: The Creating Home curriculum helps children develop a sense of home that is grounded in faith. Children explore several ideas about "home" including the family home and the faith home -- our church. Activities in this program involve stories and observations about the natural world.

3rd - 5th grades: The Moral Tales curriculum provides children with the spiritual and ethical tools they need to make choices and take actions reflective of their Unitarian Universalist beliefs and values. The stories in Moral Tales draw upon many UU sources and stories to help our children turn their moral and ethical beliefs into action.

Middle school: You the Creator is an arts-centered UU curriculum that focuses on providing our youth the tools they need to become creative forces in the world. Middle schoolers will engage in creative activities and learn about the universal role of the creative arts in religion and spirituality.

High school: We are currently building our high school youth group. Please contact Rina Shere if you have a child who is interested in helping us!

Please check the calendar for special outings and social activities. We are currently recruiting volunteers to serve as RE teachers, as Faith in Action guests, and as visiting artists, writers and musicians.
